The Perfect Baby Bedtime Routine (4 Simple Steps)

If there's one thing sleep experts agree on, it's this: a consistent bedtime routine is the highest-return habit in baby sleep. It doesn't need to be long or complicated — it needs to be the same, every night.

Why routines work

Babies can't read clocks, but they're exceptional pattern detectors. A repeated sequence of events tells the brain "sleep is coming," triggering melatonin release and lowering arousal before the crib. Research consistently links a regular bedtime routine with faster sleep onset and fewer night wakings.

The 4-step routine (20–30 minutes)

Step 1: Wind-down signal (5 min)

Dim the lights everywhere, lower voices, screens off. This is the "opening credits" — it should happen the same way every night, ideally at the same time (±30 minutes).

Step 2: Bath or wash (5–10 min)

A warm bath doesn't just clean — the temperature drop afterward naturally makes babies drowsy. No bath night? A warm washcloth wipe-down works as the same signal.

Step 3: Feed, then pyjamas + sleep sack (10 min)

Feeding before pyjamas (rather than last) helps break the feed-to-sleep association over time. Keep lights low and interaction calm.

Step 4: Connection + into the crib awake (5 min)

A song, a short book, a cuddle — pick one or two and keep them short. Then into the crib drowsy but awake, start your soothing cue, and leave. This is where consistent sensory cues shine: the same gentle rhythm every night — like the patting of the DreamBud soothing hand or the comfort of CuddleBud (per age guidance) — becomes a powerful "it's sleep time" signal in itself.

The rules that make it stick

  • Same order, every night. The sequence is the signal.
  • Keep it under 30 minutes. Longer routines drift into overtired territory.
  • Anyone can run it. Write it down so partners, grandparents, and babysitters do it identically.
  • Start earlier than you think. Most babies under 1 do best with bedtime between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.
  • Travel with it. The routine is portable even when the room isn't — see our travel sleep guide.

How long until it works?

Most families see a difference within 1–2 weeks of strict consistency. The routine won't fix everything alone — wake windows and independent settling matter too — but it's the foundation everything else builds on.
